As of this writing, it is 58 days till Donald Trump is scheduled by inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, and the rest of the world is already preparing for it. Joe Biden is a lame duck, and his presence at the G20 Summit in Brazil will likely be his last major engagement.
Already, the world is preparing for Trump’s return. Things will be different than in 2016; eight years ago, he was largely an outlier, largely scoffed at by the heads of most countries save Isreal, Japan, India, and Hungary.
But things have changed since, and a much more growing number of world leaders are eager to welcome him back to the international arena. He will likely be in similar company, with Italy’s Giorgia Meloni sharing his views on immigration, social policy, and the economy. Argentina’s Javier Milei, called the “Trump of the Pampas”, was the first foreign leader to meet with him following his victory. More conservative leadership changes are possible in the near future, specifically in Canada and Germany.
Elsewhere, China is floating potential concessions to avert a prolonged trade war, Taiwan is planning a massive American arms purchase, and Ukraine is floating a Trump-negotiated ceasefire, with added military support and business deals from Ukraine in the future.
The world is a much different place than it was in 2016. Accordingly, it seems that President Trump is molding his domestic and foreign policy to reflect that.
